CANON HISTORY: Neferpitou + Chimera Ants | Gon in Chimera Ant arc + Kite
There were a lot of side stories in Chimera Ants, but the conflict between Gon & Neferpitou over Kite's death should give you the best idea without going into every little detail.

There were a lot of side stories in Chimera Ants, but the conflict between Gon & Neferpitou over Kite's death should give you the best idea without going into every little detail.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Introducing humans to the Chimera Ant food chain allowed impossible things to happen. It made them bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, and more independent. Aside from the King himself, Neferpitou is the finest specimen of Chimera Ant evolution there is. At a glance, Neferpitou is a monster. The Royal Guards and their King have the ability to utterly wipe out entire country's worth of humans: choosing to eat some, converting others into soldiers, and callously killing the rest. Pitou is capable of utter cruelty, not just at the order of its King (which Pitou follows to the letter) but also in its own time.
Pitou's cruelty, however, is a cat's playful cruelty. It is in its nature to be a hunter, to toy with its prey. This concept of the ant's 'nature' is a moral dilemma that is reflected on several times within the arc, with several characters questioning if it is right to eradicate a species for their nature alone. Also if it is right to kill them when they exhibit human intelligence and at times human emotion. In fact, nearly all of the ants, with the exception of Shaiapouf(butterfly satan), learn to respect, befriend, or care for humans in some way, which gives several of the heroes sent to stop them pause. Who becomes the monster in that situation? This is a question you are meant to ask during the arc.
For Pitou's personality, this question informs that they are both dangerous, as well as innocent. They have an animal's lack of real malice or intent for evil. They have done things the humans see as evil, but it was done due to biological imperatives of survival, expansion, obedience. However, several times within the arc, Pitou's aura is described as being very malicious but, each time this description was made, Pitou was protecting either the pregnant Queen or the beloved King. Why wouldn't Pitou have malice against anyone trying to enter the ant's domain and possibly injure the monarchs? Its immense nen just allows it to project and amplify its protectiveness. Killua notices this trait when Pitou is desperately trying to protect Komugi from Gon, comparing Neferpitou to a mother cat. A cat's instinct to protect its young is instinctive and less emotionally complex than a human's: but is that less worthy? Despite the fact that Pitou has used its powers in unfortunate ways, it is still a guardian and a healer.
Pitou is loyal to its core, it was born with the imperative to protect the King and this mission is what it lives for. The strength of this genetic wiring can be seen late in the arc when Meruem attempts to bow before a converted Palm. Although formerly human and against the ants, Palm begins to cry and screams that he can't bow before her because he is her King. Palm is only a soldier ant, for a member of the Royal Guard this devotion and adoration is much greater.
As Meruem learns to care for and respect humans through his interactions with Komugi, the same seeds begin to take root in two of his Guards. He asks Neferpitou to look out for the human girl, and then when the palace is attacked, to save her life. Neferpitou is forced to articulate this to Gon, saying that it cares for the girl because its King cares for her. Unlike Pouf, Neferpitou can understand the King's relationship to the girl, in its own way, because it also had affection and admiration for Kite. Although it showed that in a gruesome way. Considering Meruem ripped his own arm off for Komugi, he also showed his affection morbidly, this is because the ants just don't really understand human affection. Their interactions are built on hierarchy, where behavior is strictly enforced and expected and has none of the flow and optional friendships of mankind. They take their bonds very seriously, especially in the royal court.
Still, as examples of human friendship and spirit are provided, the ants learn. When Neferpitou is taken to Kite's puppet by Gon, it apologetically tells the boy that the body has no soul and cannot be healed. It observes Gon's sadness and anger, and apologizes again in explaining that it must kill him, in order to protect the king. This one-sided conversation shows that Pitou is capable of coming around to certain aspects of human nature, but is ultimately still bound by the ant paradigm.
I’m sorry to say this, but, I must kill you. For the king.
This dissonance is observed by Chairman Netero when he fights Meruem, he recognizes that both human and ant are present, and that some human kindness is sprouting, but expresses his doubts that the creatures can ever fully overcome their biological wiring and live peacefully with mankind. Certainly not while their wildly powerful King and Royal Guards live to embolden the race and bolster its numbers.
What I would like to summarize about this based on these various anecdotes is that Neferpitou has conflicting sides to itself. It has the intelligence and individuality of a human, the playfulness and curiosity of a cat, the obedience and loyalty of an ant. It is not entirely human, and to expect it to behave as such is not really respecting its nature. But its immense power and lack of clear morality make it incredibly dangerous and worthy of fear. With its particular set of powers and roles, it is as capable of devotion and caring as it is for thoughtless sadism. It doesn't really have any reason to question what it does, it hasn't learned enough about people to know what hurts them or they deem wrong. They have different rules than ants, and those rules cannot truly be learned without first-hand experience and guidance.
At surface level, Pitou's most obvious traits are likely the cat ones. It appears inquisitive and eager, except when it's being fickle and standoffish. Separating Pitou from the King and that duty will allow me to lower its violence level, since it will not be on guard for such dangers towards its beloved King.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Possesses three nen abilities:
ː Puppeteers - Nen dolls which attach strings to victims, able to control them with simple commands from Neferpitou. It can maintain a number of these puppeteers simultaneously.
ː Terpischora - A specific puppeteer Pitou summons to control its own body. Terpischora can use Pitou's body above and beyond its already immense capabilities. Remains in effect until the nen dissipates or the body is well and truly destroyed. Even after Gon took off Pitou's head, the body continued to attack.
ː Dr. Blythe - Blythe is a doll which grows from Pitou's tail. When summoned, Blythe takes all of Pitou's concentration and all puppets and increased awareness (called en) is dropped. Blythe can surgically treat any wounds, although cannot revive the dead. Blythe cannot move from where it was summoned, and Pitou's tail will only stretch up to 20 meters away from it.
Other Skills:
+ Speed - Can move faster than the eye, can propel self long long long distances in seconds, despite lack of wings.
+ Strength - Can carve off limbs. Can withstand large amounts of damage, has a carapace.
+ Presence - Enhanced senses, both the usual five senses as well as its nen power. Can extend its nen out in a cloud which allows it to be aware of things outside of its sight, and is also so terrifying that intruders have a hard time proceeding into the nen once they reach it. Specifically, other nen users can feel how strong they are.
+ Intelligence - Neferpitou is terrifyingly intelligent. I think the most apt example of this is that it read a couple of books about how the human brain works, went 'I get it now' and was immediately able to cut open a hunter's head and begin torturously manipulating the subject's brain to force the truth about nen abilities out of him. Similarly, from that explanation, Pitou was immediately able to grasp how nen worked and master the abilities of its choosing.
+ Instincts & Reflexes - Catlike, Pitou always lands on its feet.

AU HISTORY:
AU PERSONALITY:
-Pitou Blythe's parent die in a grizzly unsolved murder, which Pitou does not remember but has always heard people whisper about. This begins social isolation in childhood, as they are treated differently.
-Lacking extended family or other available caretaker, Pitou is moved to a community orphanage. Spends ages of 3 to 10 here.
-Pitou learns to read very early, and spends more time doing that than socializing with other kids. They are also athletically competitive, so even when they do socialize the other kids don't enjoy their intensity.
-Learns they can get a reaction out of others by saying and doing morbid things, and proceeds to do so. Learned behavior after hearing too much speculation on the death of parents.
-As a pre-teen, Pitou is moved into a foster care situation to try to facilitate more socialization through nuclear family life, as they fail to develop some expected skills. Moves through 2 families from the age of 11 to 16.
-The first family is simply unprepared for Pitou's issues. They find themselves a little bit scared of Pitou's intelligence and have no success with bonding nor controlling Pitou's behavior.
-Skips school, gets into fights with other kids, rude to teachers, does not do homework. All projects that are completed are completed on creepy topics.
-The second family is more versed in troubled fosters, and has more success with getting Pitou to conform to structure of a family life.
-Pitou is moved through several schools, trying to find the right fit for a very bright but very difficult kid. Public, private, charter, etc. Does not do well with strong restrictions, does not do any better with free form schooling either.
-Moved up a grade to try to stimulate their interest. Graduating early is a motivator to Pitou, the family takes advantage of this by encouraging Pitou to challenge themselves and graduate as early as possible.
-Still, much more motivated by extra-curricular activities such as volunteering at animal shelter, costume design for local theater, and martial arts. Gets talked in to a science club, but is disliked by other members for flippant attitude. The agreement with the family becomes that all extra activities will be fully supported and paid for as long as grades and attendance stay up.
-Begins college two years early with scholarship support, age 16.
-Begins in pre-med/neuroscience, very challenging, highly promising. Pitou, however, quickly becomes bored with the classroom. Does not want to commit to the full program.
-Switches to the mortuary sciences, fairly good credit transfer between degrees for classes such as anatomy and physiology. The two year program is much more appealing to Pitou's impatience.
-Struggles with interpersonal requirements of the mortuary degree, but improves socially (at surface level) from the experience. Can feign to be personable even if they don't genuinely feel it.
-Takes apprenticeship in Recolle, age 20.
-Involves self vigorously in the many opportunities for hobbies in the city.
-Remains better in the morgue than out on the showroom.
-After several years apprenticeship takes a permanent position with the help of eccentric medical examiner, Grell. [ X ]
-Current age: 23. Lives alone in a city apartment with 5 cats.
AU PERSONALITY:
Due to the fact that much of Pitou's original personality and themes are based around just how inhuman they are, in order to convert the character over to a born human they would need to be a rather strange human. One important thing about Pitou to remember, as well, is their feline fickleness. This particular attribute makes it difficult to make a concrete statement about their behavior that can't also be shown an exception.
In general, Pitou is upbeat and personable, socializing does not make them anxious, and they are not shy. There is little about other people or their opinions that Pitou particularly cares about, thus much of the little annoyances of other people slides off without notice. They are extremely independent and thinks very highly of themselves. They have a vast intelligence that supports this, although this intelligence is more in terms of academic smarts over emotional literacy. Pitou doesn't really understand why others feel the way they do.
Although Pitou's demeanor is generally smiling, they can be both purposefully and tactlessly cruel while keeping that same smile. Pitou likes to push people's buttons, and is the kind to casually bully others, even people they like, just to see if they'll stand up for themselves. In a way, Pitou hopes they do! They enjoy excitement and conflict, at least on their own terms. Other people's drama is boring, and Pitou is not a good listener nor shoulder to cry on. They are openly exasperated with this kind of thing.
Mainly, Pitou sees other people as toys to be played with. In canon, they do this very literally, and it is morbid as hell. For the AU I've converted this into their interest in mortuary science, as well as a penchant for actual dolls and their costuming. This attitude that others are there for their amusement is also what encourages Pitou's interest in martial arts. Battle is considered playing/dancing throughout canon, and Pitou is always looking for better and better fighters to play with.
Although eager for the excitement of conflict, Pitou is not exactly malicious. Their goal isn't really to hurt so much as it is to amuse themselves, and just doesn't happen to care much if that involves hurting someone.
To speak of an exception, however, as heartless as it is to treat other people as dollies for amusement, this also plays in to Pitou's role as a caretaker. Though possessive and de-humanizing, they do take close care of those they've taken possession of. Pitou can be very devoted, in the right circumstances, although regardless: they don't really understand the concept of love as separate from ownership, whether it is Pitou owning someone or being owned by someone else (e.g. their king).
I don't currently have an analogy for this in terms of AU CR, but it is just yet another exception to Pitou's usual aloof behavior. What I currently have to actively represent this loyalty and caretaking is their work as an animal shelter volunteer. They own the cats, but also wants to protect and care for them; not just the ones in their own home, but also the stray community at large.
For all of Pitou's issues, they do like to have other people around. To talk to and admire their skills and whatnot. What's the point, really, of all its skills and knowledge if no one's there to appreciate? Except when Pitou just wants to be left alone, of course. That's just Cat 101.
Despite their vast intelligence, they prefer to use their mind for their own purposes, and isn't out to change the world or revolutionize science. Because Pitou cares mostly for amusement, they have very little by way longterm goals or aspirations. They live very much in the moment, without direction. This seems to make sense for the catlike personality, once removed from the imperatives of to the King that we saw in canon. But it does have consequences: as a human, Pitou is definitely a bit hollow inside, and thus throws themselves into all the hobbies trying to compensate for a purpose that isn't really there.
